Rope Access Electrical Work — High-Voltage, Comms & Tower Electrics

Rope access electrical work at height — HV and LV installation, tower lighting, comms cabling, lightning protection, and aviation obstruction lights — by IRATA technicians with electrical trade certification.

✓ IRATA certified    ✓ OHS Act compliant    ✓ South Africa, sub-Saharan Africa & offshore    ✓ Fully insured

What We Do

Three electrical-at-height scopes we deliver.

Lightning Protection & Earthing

Installation, inspection and repair of lightning protection systems and earthing on tall structures — stacks, towers, masts, and high-rise roofs. Testing to SANS 62305 with certification.

Aviation Obstruction & Tower Lighting

Installation, replacement and maintenance of aviation obstruction lights, tower beacons, and external lighting on telecoms and broadcast towers. Compliant with aviation authority requirements.

Comms, Antenna & Cable Work

Antenna installation and alignment, comms cable pulling and termination, and external wiring on towers, masts and buildings — executed on rope by IRATA techs with the electrical competence required.

How It Works

  1. Permit & isolation. Confirm isolations from the electrical authority or asset owner, test for dead, apply earths, and issue permit-to-work before any technician starts.
  2. Rigging plan. Anchors assessed for electrical safety (not near live conductors), exclusion zones set, and rescue plan tailored for the electrical context.
  3. Execute on rope. Installation, maintenance or repair executed by competent persons with both rope access and electrical trade qualifications. Continuous communication with the ground supervisor.
  4. Test & certify. Post-work testing (earth loop, continuity, insulation) recorded and certified. Handover pack with test results for the asset owner’s records.

Common Questions

Are your technicians qualified electricians?

For electrical scopes we provide technicians with the combination of rope access certification (IRATA) and the electrical trade qualification the work requires — registered electrician for LV, qualified HV technicians for HV work, or RF-competent riggers for antenna work. We match the team to the scope.

Do you do lightning protection testing?

Yes — installation, inspection, testing and certification of LPS and earthing systems on tall structures, to SANS 62305. Test certificates are provided on completion.

Can you work on live equipment?

We prefer to work on isolated, dead systems with permits in place — it’s the safest way to do electrical work at height. Where live work is unavoidable (some comms scopes), we follow the asset owner’s live-work procedures with competent live workers and additional controls.

Can you replace obstruction lights on telecoms towers?

Yes — aviation obstruction lights, side lights, and beacons on telecoms masts and broadcast towers. Replacement in line with the aviation authority’s requirements, with before/after photos and recommissioning records.
