What We Do
The three layerworks scopes we run most often on civils projects.
Subgrade Preparation
In-situ subgrade stripped, moisture-conditioned, and compacted to specified density. Soft spots identified and treated. Level and CBR confirmed before the engineered layers go on top.
Subbase & Base Layers
Selected granular subbase and base material placed in layers at controlled moisture content, rolled to the specified density, and tested by independent labs. SANS 1200 ME compliant.
Cement-Treated & Stabilised Layers
Cement-stabilised base layers for roads and heavy-duty hardstandings where the engineer specifies stabilisation. Correct cement content, mixing, compaction before initial set, and curing.
How It Works
- Engineer’s spec. Layerworks is driven entirely by the engineer’s pavement design — layer thicknesses, material specifications, compaction requirements, and testing frequencies. We build to the spec, not around it.
- Material selection. We source material that meets the grading and plasticity requirements of the spec from reputable borrow pits or suppliers, with material certificates for each load.
- Placement and compaction. Material spread to the correct loose thickness, moistened or aerated to optimum moisture content, and rolled to the specified density with suitable compaction plant.
- Testing. In-situ density testing (nuclear or sand replacement) at the frequencies specified in the contract. Proof rolling. Thickness checks. Non-conforming areas are reworked — not written off.
- Sign-off and next layer. Each layer signed off by the engineer before the next layer goes on. No surprises downstream. Complete testing file handed over on completion.
Common Questions
Why is layerworks so important?
Everything you build on top — asphalt, concrete pavers, slabs, foundations — is only as good as the layerworks underneath. Under-compacted or poorly graded layers cause settlement, cracking, and failures that are impossible to fix without ripping it up. Get the layerworks right, everything else lasts.
What is G5, G6, G7 material?
G-class labels (G1 through G10) are the SANS classification for road-building material, from highest quality (G1) to lowest. Engineers spec different G-classes for different layers — typically G7/G6 for subbase, G5/G4 for base courses. We source to the spec.
How do you prove compaction?
Independent density testing by accredited labs, at the frequencies specified in the contract. Results are recorded, compared to the spec, and included in the handover file. We don’t mark our own homework.
Can you work to Colto and SANS 1200 both?
Yes — Colto is the heavier civils and road contract standard, SANS 1200 is the building and lighter civils standard. We work to either, depending on the contract specification.
