What We Do

Flat Roof Two-Layer Systems

Full two-layer APP-modified bitumen systems — base sheet mechanically fixed or fully bonded, cap sheet torched to the base. Mineral top finish for UV, sand or foil for under-tile. 15–20 year life on the coast.

Parapet & Upstand Detail

Correct upstand detailing on parapets and walls, with membrane turned up 150mm minimum, terminated in a reglet cut into the wall or a chased termination bar. The detail where most roofs actually fail.

Balcony & Terrace Waterproofing

Torch-on under tile-finish balconies, with proper drainage falls, drip detail at the edge, and correct threshold termination. Rebuild of the screed and tile finish on top — one contractor, one guarantee.

How It Works

Roof inspection. Existing membrane assessed, leak points identified, falls checked, outlets cleared. We confirm whether the existing system can be overlaid or needs a full strip.
System spec. We spec the right base and cap sheet for the application — residential flat roof, commercial parapet, under-tile balcony — and match the termination detail to the existing structure.
Strip or prep. Existing failed membrane removed, substrate cleaned and primed with bitumen primer, penetrations and outlets prepped. No shortcuts at the prep stage.
Torch install. Base sheet laid, fully bonded or mechanically fixed per spec. Cap sheet torched to the base with correct overlap and welded seams. Upstands carried to 150mm minimum and correctly terminated.
Flood test and handover. Where the roof can hold water, we flood-test for 24 hours before releasing. Handover with written workmanship guarantee and manufacturer warranty documents.

Common Questions

Is torch-on still the best for flat roofs on the coast?

For long life on a flat roof exposed to coastal sun and wind, yes — a properly installed two-layer torch-on bitumen system still outlives most alternatives. Liquid systems win for complex detail and over-coating, torch-on wins for raw longevity on open roofs.

Does torch-on smell or leave marks on the house?

The installation has some bitumen smell while hot, which dissipates quickly. We set up drip trays and protect the walls during heat work. No lingering smell once the membrane cools.

What’s the difference between APP and SBS bitumen?

APP-modified bitumen is stiffer, more heat-resistant, and the standard choice for exposed flat roofs on the coast. SBS-modified bitumen is more flexible, better in cold climates, and typically used under other finishes. We use APP for exposed applications in George.

Can I walk on a torch-on roof?

Yes, occasionally, for maintenance access. For daily traffic or an entertainment area, you need a protected system — tiles over screed, paving, or a walkway membrane. Tell us how the roof will be used and we’ll spec accordingly.
